Captain America:
What’s the matter? You scared of a little lightning?
Loki:
I’m not overly fond of what follows.
It’s Lightning Safety Awareness Week (June 23-29) and we have a special message from Darth Vader and some of our electric experts: be careful out there this summer, folks.
Here are five lightning factoids presented by our Pop! Lightning connoisseurs:
The Flash is so fond of lightning that he dons the symbol on his chest. If the DC superhero is really as quick as lightning, that means The Flash sets off the radar gun at 270,000 MPH. At that speed, he can reach the moon in slightly less than an hour.
Doc Brown knows a thing or two about harnessing the awesome power of lightning. He famously returned Marty McFly to 1985 using a bolt that struck the clock tower in Hill Valley, Calif. One lightning bolt can contain up to a billion volts or enough juice to power the car batteries of close to 80 million Deloreans.
Thor is the God of Thunder, but…technically there is no thunder without lightning. The Asgard guardian has been known to harness the Odin Force, mostly because he’s a god. Us humans, however, are a little more susceptible to electricity. But not as much as you’d think. Lightning only kills roughly one in every 10 people it strikes. Thor, by contrast, has a much higher killing percentage.
Raiden saw his lightning changed to red after the protector of Earthrealm was corrupted in Mortal Kombat X Story Mode. While this rendered him a bad guy, in reality, lightning can be any color of the spectrum depending on distance, temperature and atmospheric conditions.
Darth Vader got an up close look at lightning when Emperor Palpatine gave him a good sizzle in “Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi.” But if there’s anyone in a galaxy near or far, far away that knows lightning’s wrath it’s Graham Duck.
The British collector saw his collection of original Star Wars merchandise — valued at roughly £20,000 — reduced to ash as the result of a lightning storm in 2005 at his Northern England home.
